Our History

The hand of God had been upon Pastor Cooper and blessed the church under his pastorate.  After much fasting and praying, the Lord led Pastor Cooper and his membership to move the church to a new location previously owned by the late, great Bishop G.E. Patterson - 261 West Mitchell Road. Although the new site would meet the needs of the church, its membership had begun to decline.  With only twenty-five members (mostly women and children), the Lighthouse Church could not afford to purchase the new building even though they felt this was where the Lord was leading them.  Nevertheless, standing on God’s Word - “Faith without works is dead. James 2:20”, the members began to work toward their goal of acquiring the building.  They sold the church on Deadrick Street and began to work to purchase the new building on Mitchell Road.  The Lord blessed the work of their hands and ultimately the Mitchell Road building became their new church home.

In 1978, once the church relocated to the Mitchell Road building, the church changed its name to House of Prayer Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ (HOP).  Years later, House of Prayer again began to outgrow its location.  Under God’s direction, the church moved once again to its current location at 4609 Knight Arnold Road.  House of Prayer officially celebrated its Mortgage Burning Ceremony for the Knight Arnold Road campus, Sunday, July 28, 2012.  This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.  ONWARD!

In it's humble beginnings, House of Prayer Church, formerly known as Lighthouse Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, was founded, established, and pastored by Elder Joe A. Clark in his home.  After the church membership grew, the Lord led them to a small church on Lewis Street in North Memphis.  The church outgrew its existing building, so the membership moved to 2506 Deadrick Street in Orange Mound.  In 1971, Bishop Cooper (then known as Brother Cooper) and his family became members of the church.  As a faithful member of the church, Brother Cooper served in various capacities over the years - church recorder, choir president, church organist, deacon, and other roles as needed.  A few years later the Lord called Brother Cooper into the preaching ministry.  He eventually became Assistant Pastor and then Senior Pastor of Lighthouse Church.
